STEM Applications in Fashion

Are you afraid of a STEM related field because it might mean giving up your sense of style in exchange for research or some other boring thing? If this is how it is believed that is not even close to the truth! STEM fields are in fact the pillars of great innovations. In fact, with a STEM degree, you could engineer the next big thing in fashion.

As you know, STEM is the acronym for Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics. It is not by accident that I become a proponent of STEM fields rather the reality and the great importance of these disciplines. My job is to inspire, encourage many of you to get involved. It is imperative to emphasize STEM applications.  For any nation to be competitive STEM fields must be taken seriously.

Are you afraid of a STEM related field because it might mean giving up your sense of style in exchange for research or some other boring thing? If this is how it is believed that is not even close to the truth!  STEM fields are in fact the pillars of great innovation.  In fact, with a STEM degree, you could engineer the next big thing in fashion.

Why fashion? It is inevitable because fashion is ubiquitous.  The clothes, shoes, and jewelries have more to do with science, technology, engineering, and math you might have realized.  How so? It is time to dive into chemistry which is a branch of science that deals with the identification of the substances of which matter is composed; the fabric is a material composed of molecules, chemical compounds. As a STEMer you may change the fashion industry due to the fact you just developed a new type of material. It could be a thermo material as to where you do not need to wear many layers. As a fashion designer, it makes perfect sense to understand how fabrics are developed.  

Technology is changing the many ways you do things. As a fashion designer, you often use computer programs in the beginning stages of your design. Using a computer makes it easier to try out different combinations instead of sketching with pencil and paper.

Precise measurement is a crucial aspect. In so doing, mathematics plays a major part in that sense.  a couple of centimeters off can make or break an outfit. While many of you may not realize, ratios and proportions are important to ensure clothes flatter a body.  Math is also required to determine the price of garments.

STEM fields can be very fun as they allow us to better understand the world. Science in a nutshell is a system of acquiring knowledge based on scientific methods. Scientists advance our understanding of the world by conducting verifiable experiments. In so doing brings the simplicity that is built upon one another. Technology is the engine that improves the humans' condition. Reading these sentences, making a phone call, texting, listening to music are all integrated part of technology. Engineering has been an exciting field since antiquity; engineering marvels are ubiquitous; engineers draw from the science to craft useful tools such as computers, phones, cars, cities, new drugs, robotic assisted devices, and so on. Mathematics has its power all around this macrocosm; it is the science and study of magnitude, multitude, structure, space, limits, function and infinite series and so on.

Do you want to make an impact, change the world? Do you want to improve people lives? The time has come; prepare, challenge yourself, develop a profound curiosity for STEM. After all, have fun; that is the fuel of your creative thoughts that will change the world. Last, have a great attitude toward profound communication that will help you articulate your vision no one else might see.
